Look at how counting beads in two colours gives a ratio of red to blue. With 2 red beads and 3 blue beads the ratio is 2:3, the total is 5, and the fraction of red beads is 2 out of 5, written 2/5. The ratio compares part to part, while the fraction compares part to whole.
